Biotin (Vitamin B8/B7/H)
Biotin is possibly the vitamin of greatest importance to the keratinization process. Biotin is essential for the formation and integrity of the keratinized tissues (skin, hair, claws, and footpads) in mammals and birds.
Description:
A water-soluble «B» vitamin
Function:
Biotin is possibly the vitamin of greatest importance to the keratinization process. Biotin is essential for the formation and integrity of the keratinized tissues (skin, hair, claws, and footpads) in mammals and birds. Biotin is a cofactor for enzymes used in a diverse array of metabolic pathways. With regard to keratin formation, biotin-dependent enzymes are directly involved in the synthesis of lipids and glucose, with particular importance placed on synthesis of long-chain fatty acids. Biotin was essential for the formation of complex lipid molecules in the ICS. They also demonstrated, in biotin-deficient calves, that biotin deficiency affected keratinizing epidermal cells, as well as the composition of the intercellular cement.
Sources:
Biotin is consumed from a wide range of food sources in the diet, but few are particularly rich sources. Foods with a relatively high biotin content include peanuts and other leafy green vegetables.
Requirements:
No studies have been conducted to establish the requirements of the horse for Biotin.
